Welcome to the SOUS General Education Forum

Greetings SOUS faculty,

This forum has been set up as part of an outcomes project that is occurring this semester (Fall 2017). SOUS is undertaking an extended post-NEASC self-study to review, standardize and, when necessary, modify, student learning outcomes in our General Education. courses, which include:

Principles and Processes of Adult Learning
College Writing I
Foundations of Critical Thinking
College Mathematics I
Introduction to Computer Applications
College Writing II
College Mathematics II
Information Literacy

There are also 18 credits distributed between the following: Arts & Humanities - 6 credits; Natural & Physical Sciences - 6 credits and Social Sciences - 6 credits

In the year prior to the last NEASC review, SOPC spent over a year doing an internal review of SOPC learning outcomes in both the programmatic sense and in specific courses offered in the program. This included a system for data collection and analysis based on rubrics created for each course, as well as a pre-post test specific to that course. It is not our intent to simply replicate these efforts but to use those experiences to develop a set of standards specific to SOUS. Directing these efforts will be Lucilia Valeiro and Rebecca Heimel, program chairs for GenEd, and James Lee, Dean of SOUS.

The intent is not to "dictate" policy but to be as inclusive of faculty voice as possible while still adhering to project timelines. Specific timelines are in development and will be posted as soon as the initial framework is approved. At present, the focus of this project will be phase 1 (assessment of current practices) and will run through the end of this semester.

This effort includes the following sequential components:

1) An analysis of existing student learning outcomes and program outcomes;
2) an analysis of current strategies for collecting data on outcomes; and
3) decisions regarding changes to GeEd SLO including:
     a) standardization of SLOs across sections of the same course
     b) creation of evaluation rubrics associated with those SLOs
     c) creation of strategies to quantify and collect this data;
     d) create strategies to feed this data back into program review and development.
4) implementation of changes, including:
     a) dissemination of revises SLOs
     b) dissemination of revised evaluation rubrics
     c) implementation of new universal assessment tools, if any
     d) provide technical assistance to all faculty in making adjustments, as needed
